A novel terahertz modulator based on the two-dimensional silicon photonic crystals of compound lattice is proposed. The structure of the photonic crystal consists of line defects and a point defect and designed to be tunable by making the point defect using optically controlled GaAs material. The device can modulate the on-off state of the terahertz wave propagating through it. The numerical simulation results show that the THz modulator has an extinction ratio of 43 dB and modulation rate of 1.67 GHz. It has advantages such as board band-gap, quick response, lower pump intensity, large extinction ratio, and a small size.
