The objective of this study was to determine whether arsenic exposure is associated with i changes in biomarkers of lung inflammation measured by the ratio of metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9)/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1), levels of soluble form of Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE) in sputum and with decreased lung capacity. Tap water of communities and first morn- ing void urine were analyzed for arsenic. Arsenic levels in this region are 50-120 μg/L in drinking water. Total arsenic urinary (median) was higher in subjects with restrictive spirometric patterns than normal spirometric patterns subjects (123.7 vs. 92.9) (p < 0.05). In addition, we observed significantly decreasedin ratio MMP-9/TIMP1 and RAGE levels [median (range)] in subjects with restrictive spirometric patterns in comparison with subjects normal [23.21 (17.5, 37.4) vs. 9.0 (3.5,16.4)] and [46.7 (34.4-71.3) vs. 31.2 (20.3-43.2)] respectively. This finding suggests a potential toxic mechanism in lung for arsenic exposure.
