CO_2 emission reduction is one of the most challenging targets for powertrain development. In the next years the market share of manual transmissions will still be on a significantly high level. Thanks to automated clutch actuation freewheeling functionality can also be realized in manual transmission cars. This function gives an important contribution in reducing the fleet consumption. ZF's Clutch-by-Wire (CBW) system development is focused on maximizing the efficiency by implementing fuel saving functions. In order to maximize customer acceptance the fuel saving and comfort increasing functions/features should be implemented in a way the driver still feels very familiar with. ZF has designed its Clutch-by-Wire System according to this philosophy for the different vehicle segments. Freewheeling as the core function for fuel saving is as well integrated as various comfort and component protection functions. In addition powertrain characteristics e.g. torsional vibration can positively be influenced whereas up to know the behavior was determined by mechanical parts only.
