Although there are a large variety of solutions and differing designs in battery cooling components and systems, some steps can be taken towards achieving a more common design and product. A modular concept was presented for a cooling plate that is flexible and easy to customize for a specific application, while maintaining common features. This makes it suitable for a market with still low volume, but with a high number of variants, by reducing the development efforts, lead time and tooling investments, and standardizing the manufacturing process. At the system level, the battery specific heat exchangers need to be part of a cooling loop with properly sized components, and further integrated within the vehicle level cooling system. The cooling system architecture and component selection can be optimized by numerical simulation in order to achieve optimal performance and minimal the cost.
