Continuously increasing electrical power demand in conventional cars - mainly driven by the increased electrification as a mean to reduce CO_2 emission and fuel consumption - is driving the current 12V power supply to its limits. As a result European OEM's are currently targeting a additional 48V vehicle power supply, mainly used for cranking and restarting an internal combustion engine, brake energy regeneration and electrical high power loads. Market introduction for 48V Systems are planned from 2016 onwards starting in the Premium segment. A general comparison of different, on the market available cell sizes and technologies, delivers no clear recommendation for 48V Systems. With NMC cells a good overall compromise can be achieved. LTO cells have advantages in matter of cold temperature performance and recuperation. The main challenges for high volume market introductions are: - Development of specific cells in matter of design and size - Standardization of 48V Systems overall the OEM's - System Cost reduction.
