Guided public health eLearning: An innovative approach to increasing the understanding of public health and maximising access to public health learning opportunities

Knowledge and understanding of public health is essential to improve the health of any population.Training in public health, however, is not always easily accessible for those most needing it. The World WideWeb provides the opportunity for everyone to have access to learning materials about public health whereverthey may be. Whilst there is a considerable and increasing amount of web based public health learning materialsavailable, they are seldom structured within a coherent framework.Rather than creating new eLearning materials, this project aimed to provide the user with a structuredframework for accessing the materials that are already available. An innovative eLearning solution, called PublicHealth eLearning, was developed to introduce a Population Health Care Model that is used as the conceptualframework for understanding how the components of public health fit together. These components are thenmapped to the knowledge required to practise public health, as defined by the syllabus of the Part A exam of theUK Faculty of Public Health [1], and related existing eLearning materials. The Public Health eLearning isavailable to anyone with access to the World Wide Web.
