Hydrogen absorption property of hyper-eutectic Mg-31 mass%Ni alloy with various microstructure was investigated. The specimen was heat treated with some conditions to form various morphology consisted of primary Mg_2Ni phase and Mg-Mg_2Ni eutectic structure. Hydrogen is rapidly absorbed in the case that the specimen has small primary Mg_2Ni phase and fine or globular Mg_2Ni phase in the eutectic structure. After finishing the activation for hydrogen absorption, hydrogen absorption behavior was not affected by the heat treatment condition. These specimens had fine globular Mg_2Ni phase in the eutectic structure. The fine globular Mg_2Ni phase seems to cause the remarkable improvement of the hydrogen absorption property. It is important to form Mg_2Ni phase globular for the hydrogen absorption behavior.
