In the last decade, the need to exploit renewable energy resources have been provided an impetus, by many governing bodies through favorable policy making and investment. This paper presents design of an optimal control scheme for Wind Energy Conversion Systems based on time scale analysis. The slow and fast dynamics governing the mechanical components of a variable speed wind turbine are modeled. The decoupled dynamics facilitate model order reduction, thereby making the control scheme computationally more efficient. Linear Quadratic Regulators are designed for the reduced order slow and fast subsystems. The simulations compare the proposed method to a full order system. The results manifest the effectiveness of the proposed method, which provides comparable control while reducing model order and computational efficiency.
