Il genere del paziente ed il genere del curante: considerazioni cliniche

The aim of this work is the attempt to reflect on the issue of Gender Identity in the psychiatrist-patient relationship, in our opinion not so much considered.Often, patients themselves make specific requests about the gender identity of their psychiatrist, sometimes the psychiatrist thinks about the gender identity more suitable for a submission, or let to the patient the choice between a man and a woman, and especially in other cases this delicate aspect is relevant in front of unpredictable changes (positive but also negative) related to the meeting with a therapist of a different gender identity than the previous one.The reflection in this area calls for a psychotherapeutic dimension of psychiatry, in order to be able to better understand a factor, the Gender Identity of the psychiatrist, who should be considered among the so-called nonspecific therapeutic factors common to all therapeutic relationships.Once inserted the Gender Identity in a more "thought" therapist's relations, we might therefore understand a choice (or a"not choice"), to obtain a more accurate reading of the needs and fantasies related to the meeting with a psychiatrist, man or woman.The work is therefore directed to a bibliographic review on the matter, that accompanies a clinical experience consisted in applying a questionnaire and psychometric assessments, designed to explore and evaluate symbolic issues related to the gender identity of the therapist.
