Models of hemostasis are developed through an iterative process of clinical observation and laboratory experimentation. The complexity of these models has evolved as the tools and techniques available to clinicians and researchers have become increasingly sophisticated. From the earliest descriptions of hemostasis in medieval texts, to the discovery of coagulation factors and the importance of biologic membranes for their activation, these models undergo continual refinement as we attempt to better understand and manipulate physiologic and pathologic thrombus formation.
