Coupling C2- and Simulation Systems in the German Armed Forces: Lessons Learnt

Coupling Command and Control (C2) Systems with training simulation systems became very important in the last decade. Several NATO groups (such as the NMSG 048, the NMSG-058 and the NMSG-106) have been established to develop techniques and standards allowing the interoperability between these two conceptually different systems (C2 and training simulation systems). In the medium term, or at least in the long term, C-BML combined with MSDL has been recognized to be an adequate solution for a combined use of C2 and simulation systems in training and exercises. At this time, these techniques are still at an early stage of development to be used in real exercises.- To close this gap the German armed forces launched a project to allow the interoperability between the German legacy systems, at one hand the C2-system FISH, and at the other hand the constructive combat simulation system KORA. The coupling between these two components is achieved by a C2-SimProxy which is able to receive HLA-compatible data from the simulation system, to transform these in a BML format and then to further send these BML-data to FISH. In this paper we will introduce the used scenario, the test bed architecture, the lessons collected and learnt during the experimentation phase and the way ahead intended for applying the results in real exercise.
