Increasing energy costs as well as rising pressure to reduce carbon dioxide emissions makes energy efficient steel production more and more interesting for steel plant operators. Waste heat recovery systems use the off-gas heat for steam production or hot water production and therefore create value. Waste heat recovery solutions for steel plants will be presented in this paper. These solutions are based on waste heat boiler systems of natural or forced circulation type. Due to the specific requirements of metallurgical furnaces these steam generators have to be capable of high dust load and highly fluctuating gas temperatures. Hence, special design is required to withstand the rough operation. Especially bundle type heat exchangers are subject to major stress and wear. Therefore experimental investigations have been made to evaluate the erosion and corrosion effects on the heat exchanger materials. The key results of this study will be presented within the paper. Besides waste heat recovery reasonable waste heat utilization within the energy network of the steel plant is of major importance. A selection of the most reasonable waste heat utilization concepts will be presented. Possibilities for power generation based on steam turbines and ORC modules will be shown.
