Steam Turbine Concepts for Future Volatile Power Market

Thermal power plants will target residual load of the upcoming volatile power market, however requiring new design strategies. Therefore this paper introduces HP stage bypass, controlled HP feed water heaters bypass and HP feed water top heater for coal fired power plants and presents these measures from a steam turbine rather than the water-steam-cycle perspective. Combining these measures, the proposed design strategy allows for load flexibility, as required in the future power market. The proposed design strategy focuses on efficiency optimization, over a broad load range, and provides large reserve power capability. Thus, the change in the current design strategy, shifts plant optimization design from rated to part load conditions. The proposed design strategy can only be a part of the new design strategy for coal fired power plants operating on residual load. Additional measures to improve flexibility of all parts of the overall plant, especially within the boiler, are required.
