Barrier and Nano-reinforced Films Produced by Multilayer Extrusion

Multilayer films can be produced in an efficient and scalable manner using a layer-multiplying process (Figure 1) which makes this technology assessable for use in a wide variety of applications. Two such applications which will be discussed here are the production of enhanced gas barrier films, and the mechanical reinforcement of films by the incorporation of fillers confined within ultra-thin layers. Some of these multilayered films themselves are candidates for use as reinforcing additives for bulk matrix polymers.
