An innovative frame system defined as the hybrid steel moment resisting frame showing multiple yielding stages during ground motions is demonstrated to be of noteworthy features in recent research works. In the present work, motivated by the modified energy balance concept, a nonlinear static procedure for evaluation of the seismic response of hybrid steel moment resisting frames showing multiple yielding stages (bilinear feature or tri-linear feature) is proposed. The theory is explored and underlying assumptions are clarified. For the purpose of demonstration, the procedure is validated by the nonlinear response history analysis of the prototype structure. To demonstrate the improved accuracy, current nonlinear static procedures are also performed. The results show that the proposed procedure can evaluate the responses of systems with more attractive accuracy compared with the other conventional approach neglecting the yielding stages.
