There is a need for enhanced control engineering for chain drives due to progressive increases in productivity requirements, shorter cycle times with complex plants and manufacturing systems, increased safety requirements, and variability in the expected lifetime of chain drives. This engineering requires access to data on several key machine parameters. Therefore chain manufacturer and customer take a great interest in chain link sensors. A continuous data acquisition (sentient machine) process offers a fundamental opportunity for integrating plants and manufacturing systems into Industry 4.0.
