SPEIRS LOCKS STUDIOS, GLASGOW: REUSE OF A REDUNDANT BUILDING TO FORM A DANCE AND MUSICAL THEATRE REHEARSAL FACILITY

Speirs Locks Studios opened in September 2010 to provide a new state of the art creative centre for the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), for courses in Modern Ballet, Musical Theatre, and Technical Production Arts. The new building comprises the retrofit of four existing disused steel portal frame storage sheds (built in 1983 for the BBC) into dance rehearsal studios and teaching facilities. Whilst a relatively modest building, it demonstrates that an excellent working environment to inspire future generations of students can be achieved with pragmatic design, and on a low budget (a construction cost of pound890 / m~(2)). The building won an RIBA 2011 award.
