This mini review focuses on the regulatory mechanism of mRNA expression of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) subunits in different tissues under adaptation to hypoxia. Data about regulation of mRNA HIF subunits expression including structure of HlFs promoter, factors that influence on transcriptional activity of these genes, and the results concerning changes in mRNA of all HIF subunits level are presented. Studies of the HIF transcriptional system activity under normoxia, acute hypoxia, hypoxic preconditioning, and intermitting hypoxia are reviewed.
