Assessing the condition and predicting the life of plant and infrastructure has been an important part of industry for many years, but how well has it been done? Ultrasonic Testing (UT) has been used to find and quantify corrosion in materials which may not be visible. UT thickness measurements are often used to tell us if we have a problem and then quantify how big that problem is, or to give us a rate of deterioration of the plant. Unless the correct equipment and methods have been used to find the predicted corrosion, the "measurements" may not be an accurate representation of the condition of the plant. This paper is aimed at giving the reader a better understanding of the potential variables that need to be taken into account and controlled, for the measurements to be truly representative of what is actually happening. What are the appropriate UT methods for both accuracy and cost effectiveness?
