This study was aimed at showing the existence of early and subtle autonomic dysregulation in young normotensive individuals with family history for cardiovascular risk (N+) as compared to their age matched controls (C). The deep breathing test (DBT) was applied as stimulus of heart rate variability (HRV); brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV) was evaluated as marker of arterial stiffness. Two methods for HRV evaluation were applied: fast Fourier transform (FFT) and wavelet transform (WT). At baseline, (N+) showed lower HRV; DBT produced larger stimulation of HRV in C. Ba-PWV was higher in (N+). Our data revealed discreet sympathetic predominance in (N+) shown by the altered HRV as well as by the higher ba-PWV. WT allowed a more detailed analysis of HRV dynamics as compared to FFT.
