Data acquisition and acoustic modeling of heterogeneous building materials

In the present, acoustic load influencing human health and well-being is increasingly growing. Deterioration of environment by high acoustic load is evident especially in urban areas with heavy traffic, industrial areas or near to the airports. Therefore, it is among others important to improve acoustic properties of building materials in order to ensure good conditions for living in areas close to the sources of acoustic noise. The very first necessary step of such enhancement lies in identification of materials acoustic properties and successive modeling of materials behavior under the defined acoustic load. High acoustic attenuation of construction elements is typically achieved by high amount of pores present in material matrix and can be further improved by convenient volumetric content and geometry of incorporated voids that are optionally filled up by bulk materials in order to scatter and attenuate acoustic waves. Brick is a very popular and therefore widely used building material in Central Europe. Therefore, its acoustic properties needs to be experimentally identified or predicted by a convenient model. Within the paper, acoustic measurements conducted on brick are presented and an example of acoustic modeling based on the Lame's equation with respect to the experimentally determined data used as input variables of the model is given.
