IMAGING MODALITIES FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF HEAD AND NECK TUMORS

With advances in imaging technology, expectations for diagnostic imaging assessments have increased. The use of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in referral institutions and in specialty practices has become commonplace. The utility of cross-sectional imaging in the assessment of tumors for diagnostic and surgical planning purposes has been demonstrated (ref). Nuclear medicine (NM) provides information regarding the physiologic abnormalities that can accompany diseases of the thyroid and potentially the parathyroid glands, however the anatomic information provided by NM is limited, and in some applications, these techniques are unreliable.
