A study was carried out in order to determine the effects of varying aggregate gradations on VMA in HMA paving mixtures, keeping the source of aggregate and asphalt cement the same. As a result of the study, an adjustment in the gradation to achieve sufficient VMA in HMA paving mix has been proposed which will ensure mix durability and will prevent bleeding or rutting. It was concluded that average asphalt film thickness around aggregate particles increases with an increase in the sum of the gap grading indicators. An empirical equation has also been developed which gives a reasonable idea of VMA of the compacted mix prior to its laying.
