The concept of solid-state-batteries has been around for many years (1). Solid electrolytes such as lithium phosphorous oxynitride glass (LiPON) have been applied in thin film batteries for many years (2). These batteries show excellent cycle performance and high reliability. In contrast to lithium ion batteries with liquid organic electrolyte solutions, solid-state batteries have a non-spillable electrolyte material. The electrolyte also has no mentionable vapor pressure at ambient temperatures. The electrically insulating solid electrolyte serves as ion conductor and separator at the same time. In addition, components like binder, olefin separator or conducting salt, which are commonly used in liquid electrolyte systems, are not required for all-solid-state batteries.
