Rheological properties of coating colors play an important role in pigment coating of paper. In the case of curtain coating, one more issues, i.e. curtain stability, is strongly associated with the rheological characteristics of coating colors. Dynamic surface tension and viscosity are known as two important properties in curtain coating. Rheology modifiers or thickeners are often used to increase the viscoelasticity of the coating color. Effect of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) on the curtain stability and bubble content in coating color was examined. Results showed that high viscosity and elastic modulus of coating color decreased curtain stability. Addition of thickener, however, increased stretching property of coating colors.
