Hydrogen serves a number of different purposes in our modern society; ranging from being an intermediate in the production of ammonia to enabling product upgrading in a refinery. Recently it has also been proposed as an alternative energy carrier for transportation purposes. Commercial large scale production is dominated by conventional steam- and autothermal reforming technologies. Emerging technologies such as gas heated reforming and combined reforming are being tested by commercial vendors and users, and catalytic partial oxidation has been much investigated by academia.
