As a clean energy carrier, the demands of hydrogen for small scale applications are growing. Fueling fuel cells for power generation and enhancing internal combustion engine performance have been recognized as important areas that hydrogen could be used to achieve higher energy efficiencies. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells require very low CO content H2; while enhancing the efficiency of internal combustion engine performance only needs hydrogen rich gas.Production of H2 from renewable biomass derived ethanol (EtOH) has been extensively studied recently since it provides a low CO2 impact energy carrier. However, the availability of bio-ethanol has been limited.
