The paper presents the basic aspects of carbon composite shells testing by ultrasonic Phased Array technique. It considers the important consequences for ultrasonic techniques arising from the strong acoustic anisotropy and layered structure of the material. The principles of application of Phased Array technology to testing of CFRP laminates are described and the most important inspection parameters are explained. Subsequently, the typical Phased Array examination of laminate specimen with implemented defects is presented. Using the results obtained in the examination the basic types of ultrasonic imaging available in Phased Array testing are explained and thoroughly discussed.
