Slope stability charts for shallow rainfall induced slope failure

摘要

The shallow type of rainfall induced slope failure is very common in tropical countries where the rainfall precipitation is high. Despite of being small in size the slope still needs immediate repair work to avoid bigger damage from recurring failure. Thence a slope stability charts were developed to provide easy and quick assessment for the chances of failure. Various slope inclinations, soil dry unit weight, internal friction angle, friction angle relative to suction and depths of infiltration were incorporated in the charts. In other words the plane envelope soil shear strength model for unsaturated soil was applied in the development of the charts and the charts encompassed the reduction in the factor of safety as the depth of infiltration increases. The application of the charts can also determine the critical depth of infiltration for a specific slope.
