Effects of phytic acid, inositol hexaphosphate (IP6), on reactive oxygen species and reproductive efficiency of cells were studied. Low concentration of phytic acid (< 5 mM) induced both the arrest of cell cycle and the decrease of naturally occurring apoptosis. On the other hand, high concentration of phytic acid (> 5 mM) increased apoptotic cells. In vitro systems, whereas low concentration of phytic acid inhibited the formation of superoxide and hydroxyl radical, high concentration (> 5 mM) of phytic acid enhanced the generation of hydroxyl radical. Incubation with high concentration (10 mM) of phytic acid also produced hydroxyl radical in PLB-985 cells.
