Carbon materials has property of high conductivity, high specific strength, high porosity, low density, etc. These characteristics are attributed to fundamental properties of the carbon atom; therefore carbon materials offer several advantages unlike other materials . Pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) is a high boiling point & aromatic hydrocarbon product as residuum of the petroleum refining process. It has attracted considerable interest as a carbon precursor because of its low cost and high carbon contents . Generally, PFO reforming process includes two processes: after the catalytic reaction conducted at a low temperature, second reaction proceeds at a high temperature. Reforming method using a conventional metal catalyst is difficult to remove the metal catalyst after the reaction. In addition, conventional halogen modified method has the problem that energy consumption of very large amount that the reaction is made at a high temperature & high pressure. In this study, we prepared reformed pitch from pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) by direct fluorination and thermal treatment at various temperatures. The effect of direct fluorination to about reforming of pitch was investigated from an elemental analysis, softening point, molecular weight and polarization microscope analysis.
