Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attention in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology due to their excellent properties [1]. Especially, its exceptional mechanical performance with a low density and high aspect ratio makes CNTs an ideal candidate for reinforcement in composites. Recently, much interest has been shown to introduce CNTs onto the surface of carbon fibers (CNTs/CF) used for preparing hierarchical (multiscale) composites [2]. At present, the available methods for preparing CNTs/CF include electrophoresis, chemical reactions and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) etc [3-5]. Among these methods CVD is widely used for its easy equipment and high production efficiency. In a fixed CVD process, catalyst or catalyst precursor is usually required to be coated on the carbon fiber surface prior to CNT growth [6]. In contrast, the attractive one-step injection (floating) chemical vapor deposition (ICVD) technique allows the catalyst and carbon source to be simultaneously introduced into the reactor to directly prepare CNTs/CF [7].
