Kiwifruits contain many bioactive compounds with known or proposed health benefits including vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and others. We extracted bioactive compounds from both skin and flesh tissues of commercially grown green and gold kiwifruits and investigated the potential cytoprotective properties of these extracts against both oxidative and inflammatory stresses. Firstly, we established a model of oxidative stress by exposing the human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y) to H2O2 and analysed for potential cytoprotective properties of kiwifruit extracts. The effects on caspase activation were also evaluated. Secondly, a sequentially-linked two cell culture system was used to investigate the toxic features of inflammatory stress. THP-1 monocytic cells were stimulated with both lipopolysaccharide and interferon-γ to generate inflammatory mediators. The effects of supernatants from stimulated THP-1 cells on SH-SY5Y cells were used as a model for inflammatory mediated toxicity and cytokines possibly associated with this toxicity were measured.
