Challenging Cases of Oral and Vulvar Disorders

Dermatologists are vital for the diagnosis and care of mucous membrane disorders, in both the oral cavity and the genital area. Too often these are missed in the vulvovaginal area due to lack of familiarity. This presentation will focus on four of these conditions.A 54 year old, post-menopausal lady developed a sore irritated vulva that gradually became very sore over months. She now has apareunia. She was treated for candidiasis and put on topical estrogen with no improvement. She had also developed a very sore tongue due to "spicy foods". See Fig 1.The choices of diagnosis are drug eruption, contact dermatitis, lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid. This is lichen planus (LP).
