Current status of the 3G digital video codec technology in Internet adaptive streaming and UHDTV applications

The 3rd generation of joint MPEG and ITU-T digital technology development and high efficiency video coding HEVC standardization process milestones are outlined. On April 13, 2013, 1st version HEVC/H.265 was approved as an ITU-T standard. The standard was formally published by the ITU-T on June 7, 2013 and by the ISO/IEC on November 25, 2013. On July 11, 2014, MPEG announced that the 2nd edition of HEVC contains three completed extensions. On October 29, 2014, HEVC/H.265 version 2 was approved as an ITU-T standard. The HEVC standard is a general one suitable for the compression of all kinds of video. However, the current focuses for the HEVC are consumer applications: dynamic adaptive streaming over Internet and next-generation HDTV (4/8K pixels per line) displays. In the second part of the paper, current status of HEVC SW/HW operational optimization and products deployment timeline are updated in Internet streaming and UHDTV solutions.
