Strategies for Improving the Markets of Primary Commodities in South Konawe Regency

This study aims to analyze the market conditions of primary commodities markets in South Konawe as viewed from the number and scope of markets; and to formulate key strategies in improving the markets of the primary commodities. This study uses primary data obtained through a questionnaire and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving the areal working units related to the primary commodities. The chosen types of primary commodities under investigation are determined based on the largest contribution of any kind of natural resources (agricultural land, plantations and livestock); while for the type of inland fisheries resources and forestry land, the primary commodities under examination are assumed homogeneous thus they are not sorted per commodity. Under these conditions, seven (7) primary commodities are examined in this study, including cocoa, cashew, rice, beef, chicken, inland fisheries and forest products. Furthermore, the strategies for market improvement are determined by conducting a SWOT analysis. Results show that plantation commodities (cashew and cocoa) has a market chain which begins solely from the collectors. The whole primary commodities in South Konawe (except for forest products and aquaculture) also has a number of markets that are originated from limited initial sale chain. Of the seven commodities being studied, aquaculture commodities and forest products have directly reached foreign markets. Some key strategies for maintaining the sustainability of natural resource management in South Konawe are: (a) Increasing entrepreneurship in the primary sectors through trainings in agribusiness, marketing management of agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry enterprises; (b) Revitalizing the role of Rural Cooperative Units; (c) strengthening institutions of field extension and competitiveness-based field schools; (d) acceleration of the adoption of technology in the primary sectors; (e) Optimization and development of infrastructure, agricultural infrastructure and facilities, such as the provision of agribusiness facilities and infrastructure; and optimization of information technology and media in the promotion of agricultural products; and (f) increasing access to primary business finance.
