The British Standards Institution (BSI) was founded in 1901 to co-ordinate the development of national standards in the United Kingdom and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1929. BSI is also a founder member of the European standards organisations (CEN and CENELEC) and the international standards organisations (ISO and IEC). BSI was formally recognised by the British Government as the UK National Standards Body under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 1982, but had in effect filled that role since 1901.
