This paper presents the use of the GIS system in approaching the strategies of regional development and environment protection and the efficiency of using this new technology. Further on, this essay discusses the National Development Plan, focusing on the part with well established strategies that correspond to relevant European norms. The paper also describes the process of making certain analyses in that which concerns the efficient use in elaborating strategies for regional development and environment protection. Finally, this dissertation draws a few conclusions on using the GIS as efficiently as possible for this approach and the advantages of this modern decision-making system for the above mentioned aspects.
