Co-based and Fe-based amorphous magnetic materials have been prepared by melt spinning technique and thermal expansion as a secondary magnetic effect has been studied by strain gauge technique. The effect of composition and temperature on thermal expansion has been measured with a sensitivity of 10"6 as fractional strain. The effect of temperature on lattice distortion in the amorphous ribbons has also been studied A marked anisotropy has been observed on the thermal expansion of these ribbons when measured along the length of the ribbons as compared to that measured at right angles to it. This is attributed to the non-identical strains to which the ribbon is subjected during its formation [1].
