Where agricultural growth has stagnated, as in large parts of Africa today, the broader transformation of economies has stalled and poor countries have remained trapped in a cycle of slow growth, low labor productivity, and poverty. This underlines the importance of improving agriculture's performance in many of the poorest countries. History shows very few examples of countries that have successfully reduced poverty through agriculture alone, but almost none have achieved it without first increasingagricultural productivity.
