One of the two naves of the rail tunnel under one of the main streets in central Warsaw had been designated for modernization. The modernization included the replacement of a traditional ballasted track system with a novel ballastless track system. The use of vibroinsulation (an embedded block system called EBS and vibroinsulation mats) was deemed necessary in order to protect people in surrounding buildings. After the modernization of the tunnel, new measurements were carried out in order to evaluate the impact of rail induced vibrations on people in buildings adjacent to the rail tunnel. The range of simulation calculations performed in order to evaluate satisfactory vibroinsulation parameters is discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the results of an investigation into the impact of vibrations on people in an adjacent building are presented. The results presented here confirmed the effectiveness of the selected vibroinsulation solution.
