In this paper, the synthesis of 3,3'-dipropyl-1,1'-oxydiethylenedicarbonyl bis(thiourea) (DPOECTU) by phase transfer catalysis was described. The synthesized DPOECTU was characterized by UV spectroscopy, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, ~1H NMR and TGA. The binding of DPOECTU with metal ions, its adsorption on chalcopyrite surfaces and corresponding performance as flotation collectors were investigated. The results indicate that DPOECTU reacted chemically with Cu~(2+) ions through its S and N atoms in the C(=S)-NH-C(=0) group to form a new chelate compound, but no reaction of DPOECTU with Zn~(2+)Pb~(2+), Fe~(3+)orFe~(2+) ions was observed. The results of adsorption and flotation experiments demonstrated that DPOECTU exhibited a superior collecting power for chalcopyrite most likely through chemisorption on chalcopyrite surface.
