One of the main wear mechanisms experienced by piping materials in oil sands processing applications is material-loss due to a combination of sliding abrasive wear and impact abrasive wear. It is well-known that hardfacing is a useful and economical way to improve performance under severe wear conditions. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the properties of a chromium carbide (iron-based) hardfacing overlay with a boron addition on mild steel and HARDOX~R 450 base plates when subjected to a combination of sliding and impact abrasion. A special impact wear tester was used to investigate the impact wear properties of the selected overlay products. In addition, the sliding abrasion wear properties of chromium carbide hardfacing overlay with and without a boron addition on mild steel and HARDOX~R 450 base metals were also evaluated by conducting ASTM G65 dry-sand rubber-wheel testing. The specific sliding abrasive and impact abrasive wear behavior of an overlay under these conditions is shown to depend on its composition, volume fraction of primary carbides, surface hardness, welding consumables and base metal properties.
