The instruments, such as medium smoke chamber, thermal image formation analyzer and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, etc., were used to measure the camouflaging mass and extinction coefficient of the red phosphorous smoke screen. When the target was covered completely, the camouflaging mass is 3.58 g/m2. The extinction coefficient is 0.14 nr/g( (3-5) u.m) and 0.078 nr/g ( (8-12) |.im) at 23 °C and 60% of relative humidity . The extinction efficiency of the red phosphorous smoke screen is calculated accurately according to the Mie scattering theory. The result indicates that the theoretical value and experimental value are rather analogical in the wave band from 8 to 12 u.m. The main extinction ability of RP is absorption.
