Desalination of sea and brackish water is one of the ways of meeting increased water demand around the globe in near future. However, till today production of potable water from saline water sources is not popular due to it’s significantly higher cost compared to the conventional water treatment processes from surface or non-saline ground water sources. According to the Desalination and Water purification Roadmap (DWPTR) released by the Department of Interior of the US, the present state-of-the-art desalination technologies are not energy efficient to gain wide-spread uses.
