Overall reform of the medical education system and current educational programs on rehabilitation medicine in Japan are described. 1. Overall reform of the medical education system in Japan Medical education in Japan has been undergoing drastic reforms for the past 4 or 5 years. The conventional medical education system was reviewed and a series of educational reforms have been pushed forward not only for undergraduate education but also for postgraduate and lifetime education. Conventionally, the medical faculty of each medical college and schools of medicine was responsible for preparing the curriculum for undergraduate education at each institution, but several years ago a model core curriculum was introduced to give students intensive education in selected core contents. Based on these curricula, medical students are required to take common tests designed to evaluate their basic knowledge before they participate in clinical practice. To become medical doctors, students must now take two types of national tests-: these common tests and the usual national exams to be taken upon graduation.
