Marine Current Turbines Ltd's tidal turbine developments: the development of an entirely new energy conversion system

This paper discusses the background to the development of Marine Current Turbines Ltd's pioneering technology for the exploitation of tidal stream energy. This includes: 1 the rationale and background for this technology, with an outline of its essential features. 2 an account of the 300 kW Seaflow Project which was the world's first truly offshore tidal turbine, installed off Lynmouth in Devon in 2003 and due for decommissioning in 2006. 3 A description of the 1.2 MW Seagen twin axial flow rotor system which is due for installation in 2006, and which forms the basis for commercial technology to follow. 4 An overview of the predicted performance and economics of the planned commercial technology together with an indication of MCT's time-line for its development.
