HUE DISCRIMINATION BEYOND 700 NM - A POTENTIAL INDICATOR OF TETRACHROMACY?

We examined normal trichromats, colordeficient subjects, and carriers of color deficiency in a color matching task using spectral lights between 700 and 750 nm, combined with standard tests of color vision and delineating color bands in the spectrum. Our subjects tended to refuse a match between 740 nm on the one hand, and any one of 700, 720, 730, and 750 nm on the other. Verbal reports indicated a saturation difference plus a pure red vs. bluish red hue difference. These results contrast with earlier findings about hue discrimination at the long end of the spectrum. Hue discrimination between long-wave lights was related to FM hue test performance, but not to the number of distinct color bands seen in the spectrum.
