Continuing growth of Indian Pharmaceutical industry will undoubtedly requires significant reduction and amounts of waste pollutants now being discarded. The Reverse Osmosis wastewater treatment plant equipped with polyamide membranes studied for its ability to remove COD, BOD, TDS and chlorides. The Reverse Osmosis has been found to be a very promising alternative separation technique compared to conventional evaporation process for treatment of pharmaceutical industry effluent. The higher rates of permeate flux generated by the Reverse Osmosis method, without the application of heat. The light yellowish green colored effluent was completely decolorized by Reverse Osmosis process. The full scale Reverse Osmosis system removed TDS by 99.7%, BOD by 99.8% and COD by 99.6% with overall water recovery rate 57%. The Reverse Osmosis was found to be very suitable for treating pharmaceutical industrial effluents and is economically more viable.
