Potential exploitable deepwater resources and exploratory fishing off the South African coast and the development of the deepwater fishery on the south Madagascar ridge

The evolution of deepwater fisheries in the Southern African context has been poorly documented. In this paper we present our account of the development of deepwater fishing off the Southern African continental shelf, including the high-seas demersalfishing effort in the southeast Atlantic Ocean, the eastern Indian Ocean and the area directly south of the South African coastline. We provide an opinion on the commercial availability and potential of the main deepwater species in these areas.
